Giving up

When giving up seems so easy

There is always that temptation to let go instead of holding on till the end. The desire to give up on some of our lofty dreams may sometimes be so tempting that lots of folks eventually throw in the towel amid adversity and turbulence. In 2009, an 18-year-old girl who had made three attempts at getting admission into the university gave up suddenly. When asked the reason why she gave up, she said, and I quote: “I don’t believe it is possible for me to ever go to the University”

Like the young girl who gave up amid difficult moments, lots of folks have equally turned their back on their goals, ambitions, and plans in life. The fact that things are not working the way we planned does not necessarily mean we have failed. We only fail when we decide not to stop moving in the direction of our dreams. There are numerous stories of successful men and women who tried severally to succeed without much result, yet they held on tenaciously to that single dream they had.

Jack Ma, the former Executive Chairman of Alibaba Group, one of the top online stores in the world shared a story about how he failed thrice in college. He also sent 30 job applications to different companies and yet he was never hired. He faced rejection in his bid to join the police force and even got his admission to Harvard University USA rejected ten times.

Ordinarily, one would expect Jack Ma to have given up after several failed attempts, but he still held on to his dreams. Today, he is among Forbes World Billionaires list and his company has more than 5,000 employees in their payroll. His advice to those who are on the verge of giving up is never to give up because they failed. He defines Success as a combination of Failure and Persistence.

Getting to the top of the success ladder is not a tea party. It’s a constant struggle, persistent and well-articulated action – oriented effort that is never ending until the goal is achieved. In the process of climbing up the ladder, we may face some knocks. No need to lie down mourning and frustrated. Get up and fight harder until victory is secured. In life, one thing I have learneds is that failure only impacts the weak, whereas the strong and determined will continue to find a way to succeed.
